Edgard Andre, of Dorchester, was sentenced to 10 to 12 years behind bars on Wednesday, Nov. 23, after his conviction earlier this week, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said. The judge ruled he must also register as a sex offender and stay away from the victim for the rest of his life.

The prosecutor thanked the victim — who was between 8 and 12 years old when Andre abused her — for her help in securing the conviction. District Attorney Kevin Hayden said her testimony was the key in the case.

The abuse was reported in the 1990s, but police weren't able to get enough evidence to arrest him then, officials said. They reopened the case after speaking with the victim in 2016.
